FA Trophy Walsall Wood 1 v GUISELEY 1 (Walsall Wood win 6-5 on penalty kicks ) Sat. 28 October 2023
In a fairly even game, not appearing to be affected by the different league placings of these two teams, the game ended 1-1 in normal time and went straight to a penalty shoot-out. Guiseley appeared to have the better of the first half, (Johnson scored in 18th minute, Walsall scored just before half time) whilst Walsall perhaps edged the second. The commentary team agreed the 1-1 score was “about right” and Guiseley were even described as being “a bit ragged” in the second 45 minutes.
First, Walsall won the toss of the coin.
Then the penalties followed:
Walsall: first taker scored, second taker scored, third taker missed, fourth taker scored, fifth taker scored, sixth taker scored, seventh taker scored
Guiseley: first- Kendall scored, second-Whelan missed, Third-Johnson scored, fourth-Murphy scored, fifth-Tongue scored, sixth-Ible scored, seventh- Ekpolo missed.
Thus the run of wins came to an end, the Lions were out of the FA trophy for another year and Walsall knocked out another higher- placed league side. The new Guiseley manager didn’t make the start he would have wished for, but attention now turns to the league and Worksop on Tuesday. It will be the league that he and the team will be judged on most, at the end of 2023/24.

Thought we did just enough to win the game. But we were far below the standard of the last five games. Give Walsall their dues they kept on battling on a pitch that favoured them. Think we hit the bar three times it was just one of them days. Onwards and upwards.

Unfortunately our winning run came to an end at Walsall Wood this afternoon with the hosts edging us out on penalties. We started the game well and tested Boucher in the home goal on several occasions. Both Walker and Johnson nearly broke the deadlock from our first corner but the keeper did enough on both occasions to keep the ball out. Then came the opener, Ekpolo chopped back and was clipped. The ref pointed to the spot which saw Johnson step up to put us ahead. It was a well taken penalty. We had a couple of chances after that but it was the hosts who were threatening more. Battersby did well to deny Verma from a tight angle. It was Hughes who levelled the score just before the break for the hosts. His curled shot was out of reach of Battersby and came at a really bad time. The second half never really seemed to get going. The hosts were the better of the two sides and had a few chances with Battersby not really being tested. Boucher was quiet up the other end too though, it was only Tongue's efforts that went over and a free kick from Kendall that had the keeper sweating before going just over. In the final few minutes Kendall did hit the ball from a powerful shot which took a deflection to hit the metal work. The game went straight to penalties and after sudden death it was the hosts who came out on top with the score at 6-5. Onto Worksop Town away on Tuesday night. Come on Guiseley! AB

Disappointing result and our play was not at the standard we have shown of late.
A Trophy run would have been good but 4 points from our next 2 tough away games would more than compensate for that.

Good for the first 20 minutes, awarded a penalty for something the ref could see but nobody else in the ground could, downhill from there. Played like strangers for most of the match, unrecognisable from Tuesday. If that was the first game you'd seen then you'd say the manager has a lot of work to do.
