New manager, Andy Welsh, in his his very first post-match interview talked of ‘bringing in a couple of players.’ Thus, it seems he has already looked at the squad and detected certain areas in need of bolstering. Tonight, is yet another chance for him to assess our strengths and weaknesses. Let’s hope we play more as we did at home to Marine and less like we did v Walsall, at Worksop. We’ve proved we can do it, but overall consistency (despite the run of recent wins) has been a problem. Good luck lads!

Lge: Worksop Town 1 v GUISELEY 1 Tues. 31 Oct. 2023
Tonight the Lions came away with a point, which, bearing in mind the home side’s excellent home form and top five position, would normally have been judged a very good result. Yet, the result can be seen as slightly disappointing because the Lions had a couple of very good chances to win the game, one where the ball was actually put into the net!
With new signing Nsaka making his debut, the two sides gave as good as they got in the first 45 minutes, but it ended all square at 0-0. It was in the second half that things began to really come to the boil, becoming much more exciting and memorable. First, Worksop got a penalty in the 65th minute for handball in the area which was dispatched to make it 1-0. Then, just a couple of minutes later, Kallan Murphy evened up the scores at 1-1. Jameel Ible next got a second yellow card and his marching orders, meaning most present would have thought the momentum would swing towards the home side. Yet, it was the ten men who had the two best chances after this to get a winner. First, Gabriel Johnson was put through on goal, but his shot rather than hitting the net, rolled past a post. Then the same player was again involved, before Joe Stacey ‘scored’ …only to have the ‘goal’ ruled out because Johnson was offside, deemed to be interfering with play-not a decision with which many of a Guiseley persuasion would have agreed. But……as we reflect in a day or so, we may feel a point in the circumstances is actually very welcome, and of course, the home side would have been favourites before a ball was kicked. It certainly ended up being a battling performance from Guiseley, not conceding after going down to ten men and also creating two genuine scoring opportunities. Thus, overall we should be satisfied with the draw, the point and best of all, the performance. (In tandem with the victory over Marine, they both offer hope for future success.)

Good point on the road tonight but it could, and perhaps should, have been all three even with ten men! The fog descended on Sandy Lane making the first half particularly hard to consume but it was a tasty 45. Kendall came close after just five minutes, his dipping shot went just wide of the mark. Rollins also had a good opportunity from a narrow angle but fired wide of Battersby's post. Hawkridge then had an opportunity which drifted wide at the start of a good spell for the hosts. They had several half chances but Battersby remained untested. Then we had a cracking chance to score in first half injury time, Pratt was put through one on one with Cooper but his shot didn't have enough on it and Bencherif recovered to clear off the line. Then from the resulting throw in Kendall's cross found the head of Ible who did superbly to nearly convert from a hard angle but it grazed the post on its way to hitting the side netting. The second half started with Worksop on top but we rode out a few nervy moments until the ref pointed to the spot. The crowd screamed for a handball but the ref, who was in a great position, waved it away and then consulted his assistant before bizarrely giving the spot kick. (Hard to tell if it was the correct decision due to the fog). Redford sent Battersby the wrong way and broke the deadlock. Then we went up the other end and Murphy simply couldn't miss from two yards out left free in the area. We sparked to life, before play resumed Ible saw red for a second yellow card for what sounded like dissent. We had some great chances after that, Johnson through one on one with Cooper but his effort drifted past Cooper's post. Then came the contentious moment, a ball was played through and Johnson was offside but the forward didn't play the ball and Stacey did well to finish from 30 yards out last a confused Cooper but before the ball crossed the line the ref blew his whistle after the assistant had his flag up. It proved costly as the match ended 1-1. A good reaction to the setback and then the red card to earn a good point on the road. Well played Guiseley! Onto Warrington Rylands away on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

Really solid result but it sounds like those who travelled will be disappointed because if things outside of our control had fallen differently, we would’ve taken all three points.

Definitely one of the best performances I have personally seen from us this season. Thought we more than held our own against a decent footballing side, and the surface seemed to help us to provide decent build up play. No idea about the penalty decision in favour of Worksop given the fog but interesting that the linesman gave it and not the ref who looked to be positioned closer. I really feared for us when went behind but credit to the players as we responded quickly through a very well worked goal finished by a powerful Murphy header. Jameel told us his second yellow was for supposedly swearing at the linesman which he denied. Real shame that Johnson couldn’t quite convert his 1-on-1 chance after super play from Murphy, and we can consider ourselves hard done by as Stacey was 100% onside as he finished for what may well have proved the winning goal. Thought new signing Nsaka grew into the game well in the second half after looking fairly anonymous earlier on, and showed some promise. All in all a very good point and much improved performance against a decent team with an excellent home record.

Really glad it was a good performance, because ideally to keep pace with the top half of the table we need to build on Liam and Martin's work where possible rather than scrap everything and start again.

3 big decisions went against us - penalty, red card and disallowed goal - but we showed real spirit against a very good side to hold out and even have chances to win Kendall and Murphy were outstanding. The disallowed goal left you wondering whether the ref and linesman know the rules.

Liner certainly didn't as he awarded us a corner earlier in the game that was a clearly a throw in and the ref seemed to think he was handing out xmas cards early I think. Great defensive display after Jameel went for an early bath
Liner certainly didn't as he had awarded us a corner minutes earlier that was actually a throw-in and the ref seemed to be handing out his christmas cards early. Great defensive display after Jameel went off and to say Worksop were fourth in the table we more than matched them in all departments and deserved the three points imo but the officials obviously thought otherwise. Where's VAR when you need it?
