What a disappointing Boxing Day result☹️ I agree that we play much better passing football when Denton is on the bench. His lack of pace up front causes us real problems. Thought Adam Boyes was brilliant and wish he was still playing for us!! Onward to BPA - a resounding win there is essential ! COYL 🦁

Hi all. First I’ll introduce myself as Stephen. I’ve been to 3 home games and just got a half season ticket, so I’m very much new. I’m going to try and do my best to be an optimist and support the club in a positive mindset! As has been mentioned, the club appears to be well run with an emphasis on community which is great to join, the printed match day programme is excellent, as is the other media such as commentaries, interviews, website etc I agree very much with some of the comments above. Starting from the back, it seems to me that Ollie Battersby is an excellent keeper, who has made many important saves to keep us in games. It was sad to see the misfortune yesterday, especially as he had another good game. In particular that save with what appeared to be his face to keep us in the game in the 2nd half. I actually think the back four played pretty well. There was a bit of miscommunication at times, but nothing overly worrying given the experience of the players and presumably how little they have played together. I think our young lads at wing back have been great. The amount of times we switch play easily is really good to watch. I feel so far from what I’ve seen is the wingbacks are not being helped by our supposedly wide midfielders. Prince and Liam do quite well in the middle to provide an option, and usually if a few passes go together we can cut quite quickly through the opponents. But yesterday in particular it was noticeable how little options there were down the wide flanks. This is also noticeable when throw ins are taken. There seems to be a general lack of movement, not sure why that is? Quick note that Gabrielle does very well in pretty much any area. Finally, agree with comments about Denton. Seemingly doesn’t really fit with the game plan that Andy is trying to use. Will this be the test of the manager whether he has the clout to bench the 701 appearance man? I’d need to see the highlights but it also looked like he was involved in conceding the first goal. I can see the advantage of having the height for defensive set pieces, but also it seems to cause confusion as he’s out of position. With knock on effects if we then can counter attack. Will be interesting to see what happens next. So in summary, I think it seems like Andy needs to find a way to get our best players into the game a bit more. It looks like on a good day we can compete in the league. I do understand it is tough though and having played a lot of lower league team sports myself, the physically and officiating does have quite a bit impact on the game. Finally, finally, I am coming to games by myself, so if anyone would could stand being with an idealist, optimist, naive new fan, I’d be interested in the company, thank you! Welcome! Of course the danger with making friends with us is that you might no longer be an optimistic, idealist or naive from then on! I found people incredibly friendly when I started coming along - people from this forum especially, like bigj and yeadoner, then erstwhile regulars like bobflymo and feldmeister. It takes a little while but once you’ve found your gang you’ll be with them a long time. Let us know on here if you’d like someone to come say hi, there’s bound to be a taker. Supporters club are great too, lots of friendly faces there. Welcome aboard, agree with your views so far - hope you find you’ve joined us in a glory season!

Any time there is a sub-par performance he gets criticised. He scored at Ilkeston, made the goal at Basford and made a good chance for Pratt at the end when the ref whistled too soon. At Ilkeston we played superb passing football with him in the side; at Basford we were better when he came on. He wasn't great yesterday, but there were more pressing problems right through the team.

Looked sluggish at times and certainly didn’t play with the verve we did a few weeks ago. The weather break didn’t do us any favours it would seem..
The key then was the Pratt and Johnson combo upfront. I sense after yesterday we may have seen the last of Pratt as he didn’t look a happy chappy even before he came on far too late in my view.
We aren’t party to what happens at training etc.
The squad Andy Welsh inherited needed tweaking and expanding. We’ve yet to see that happen but I suspect yesterday may see that process pick up pace with a vengeance.
No grounds for despair beaten by a lowly but galvanised Marske side endeavouring to do their bit to achieve survival as a club. We wish them well on that front.
January may well make or break our season.

I feel sorry for Denton as well, but if the club are to progress, some hard decisions need to be made and unfortunately sentiment needs to be put aside. He has just not been mobile or fast enough to be a make significant impact for the way the various incarnations of the team have tried to play this season. I agree with others that he would be a useful regular on the bench, but I can't see him putting up with that.
For me, the first two names on the team sheet in attack are Johnson and Murphy. Their dynamism is a defender's nightmare.
Talking of first names on the team sheet, based on his performances last season, surely it would be Courtney Meppen-Walters, particularly given our defensive frailties. However, he's barely appeared this season. Does anyone know why?

It's not about sentiment; it is about effectiveness. He is second top scorer and is more than useful defending set pieces. It is the number of goals we are conceding that is the problem. I think Courtney has struggled with fitness after missing several weeks of the seasons with injury.

Totally agree Ivor Tom may not be the most mobile but do we have any other player who can win a ball, hold it and then lay it off as effectively as he does? He is one of those players who uses his experience to good effect as not every player has to be running around at 100 mph. As the old say goes "its not what you've, it's how you use it" and in Dents case thats to good effect imo.

I think it's hard to criticise one individual player yesterday, it was an off day but things have been looking good up to the last few weeks where other than yesterday we have got results.
Once the busy festive period is out of the way hopefully we can strengthen the squad when clubs are more willing to let their players go. AB

It was a disappointing result and performance A shame as a good crowd and what was offered wouldn’t necessarily attract the neutrals although those who ventured into the clubhouse afterwards might think differently Thought Marske were the better team mainly due to Mr Boyes who remains a very good striker (although I admit to not liking his views on X) Guiseley looked short in terms of squad depth as reflected by the one of the weakest benches that I can remember Andy Welsh was impressive at the Meet The Managers I think he has inherited a squad that he wouldn’t necessarily have chosen. There are clearly contracted players (on decent wages) who he doesn’t fancy. If we can move them on to allow refreshing of his squad, then i think we will move forward…
