Given the state of the surface at Atherton this might be a good time to give the tricky wingers a bit of a rest and go long. Denton and Johnson up top, Liam Tongue in the middle, Kendall and Brown with instructions to get the ball forward at every opportunity. Keep it simple. Brace yourselves to get clattered. Win by any means necessary. Let’s have an ugly three points tonight please.

Agree. Think 3 points is the "must" for tonight with or without "pretty" football.

Hah! Suspect it has more to do with Andy Welsh learning from mistakes made against Stafford but I’ll take the credit just in case! I wasn’t there last night but it didn’t sound like a particularly pretty game. So pleased to see Gabriel Johnson score - it’s been a while and he needed that goal! Hope that kicks him back into the sort of scoring form he was in before his injury!

Not a great game although we were a lot better running down the slope in the second half. First half pretty much a none event apart from one good save from Ollie from memory and first Gaby goal to be ruled out for offside. Second half played with more intensity & more in their half. First goal bit fortunate going through goalie from Liam's shot, but on target with power which needed saving & their goalie didn't, this after Gaby's second goal to be ruled out for ball being out for throw-in early which it wasn't as I was in line, but there you go.
Second goal was a good finish by Gaby with two defenders around him, he made a half yard of space & tuck it into the corner for 2-0. Good job really as they got a goal from a defensive error it looked like (I was at the other end). After that game petered out with Atherton becoming more frustrated & picking up yellow cards, one a second meaning they went down to 10 for last few minutes. At end their manager came up to ref for a "discussion" received a yellow & tried his level best to turn it red.
Overall a win which was badly needed on a pudding of a sloping pitch with the ball bobbling all over, but the lads stuck at it & got the reward they deserved. Onto Radcliffe on Sat.

A good reaction from defeat at Stafford last night on a tricky surface and slope, I’m not quite sure how I forgot about the slope from last season but wow that really is something! Atherton had the better of the first half playing down hill and came closest to scoring on a couple of occasions. A shot drifted just over and Thompson’s cross nearly deceived everyone but cannoned back off the post before being cleared. Caine forced Battersby into a good save too, the goalkeeper just able to tip a header over the bar. Just before the half hour mark Johnson did have the ball in the net finishing off Nsaka’s low shot which the keeper had palmed into the path of the striker but the goal was chalked off for offside. The half petered out from there but second 45 got off to a fast start. Johnson had the ball in the net again just five minutes in but once again the goal was ruled out after the ball was judged to have gone out earlier in the move. Then seven minutes later the deadlock was broken when Liam Tongue’s low shot went through Donaghy’s hands and in. A fortuitous opener but the game had a scrappy feel to it and that was reflected in the opening goal. Donaghy made amends though with two top stops to deny Kendall and Ekpolo from extending our advantage. Johnson looked to have wrapped it up 15 minutes from time with an excellent finish seeing off two home defenders before firing past Donaghy. With ten minutes left Atherton got the goal their battling had deserved when Lusiama took advantage of a loose ball to nip in ahead of Battersby. The hosts were down to 10 men with three minutes left when Ryder got his second yellow for a rash challenge on Johnson. It proved to be the last action of a game low on quality but as always a lovely welcome was received at Atherton. Well played Guiseley! Onto Radcliffe at home on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB
