An enjoyable evening watching the academy side in what was an entertaining and competitive contest. I thought the lads equipped themselves very well in presumably for many of them was their first taste of men’s football. They more than held their own, including a bright opening twenty minutes of the second half where they looked on top for that period.
Armthorpe had the better of the clear cut efforts and in truth they should have had more, missing a golden one on one opportunity in the first half and then rattling the bar late on. Lots of nice passages of play from us, and aside from those already with first team forms I thought Marley Spence looked a particularly decent prospect.
It looked like a number of first team players were there as well last night, not sure if they had trained there beforehand. They get a nice break and roll on Stevenage.

Thought we could have sneaked a draw but Armthorpe took their chances (and missed a few!) so no complaints and the experience will stand the Young Lions in good stead. We grew into the game after a slow start and as mike25 says up to the midway point in the second half we had them worried and after their second we also finished with a flourish but just couldn't find the opening to square matters.

A shame to exit the County Cup but at least our young players gained an experience from it and came oh so close to progression. Armthorpe took a well deserved lead early on but they had come close before that. As mentioned above they could have scored a few more after the first goal with shots drifting just wide of the mark. They had an excellent opportunity though after jinxing last Booth they had the whole goal to aim for but Westfall made a tremendous block in the six yard box to stop them from going two in front. This acted as a push to the young team and we came more into the game. Lucas Alexander leveled the scores with a stunning free kick that flew into the top corner. Then Murray and Rushworth both came close as the half ended. The second half we did struggle to really break through but again a shot rolled just wide before Armthorpe took a late lead. Booth had a made a few saves earlier in the half but he couldn’t stop the winner as we exited the competition. On to Stevenage away in 10 days time. Come on Guiseley! AB
