Nice to see friends and have a drink in the sunshine. Could take or leave the rest of it tbh, but I’ve never really enjoyed pre-season.

Same Nik totally felt I was wasting my time and money. On a different note you expect to see a manager emotionally involved in a game but I sincerely hope that the language he uses at this time is not the same during team preparation or half time team talks because how can you get your instructions across if you're shouting and two thirds of the words you use are recognised swear words. To my mind, accept a professional salary act like a professional to everyone you come in contact with in your role.

A point on the board on a sunny Spring afternoon at Nethermoor. In a first half of few chances the visitors more the deserved their lead. Rouse headed in at the back post after slack marking to give his team a priceless advantage. Bakkor nearly levelled matters with an audacious shot which nearly looped over O'Shaugnessy but the keeper recovered to tip the ball over the bar. That was the only real action in a dour opening 45. The second half provided much more entertainment for the near 700 crowd. Five minutes in the score was level, Chippendale's free kick low down to the keeper's right hauled us back into the game. Rather disappointingly the visiting keeper went relatively untested after that and had a quiet afternoon despite us getting into plenty of dangerous positions. The visitors were fighting to get all three points to aid their survival fight but they couldn't work a way past Bacon. Move on to a trip to Atherton Collieries on Monday. Come on Guiseley! AB

It was a day of nostalgia for me. This afternoon's spectacle reminded me of the sort of live sport I used to watch on Saturday afternoons in the 1970's. However, those spectacles usually featured combatants such as Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and Kendo Nagasaki wrestling at Wigan Town Hall, and televised on ITV's World of Sport. Today we even had the mandatory referee who had no control of the situation. The only thing missing from today's grapple-fest was an elderly lady battering one of the combatants with a fold-up chair, though I'm sure Mr Phillips would have been only too happy to step in as a substitute.
A game of 2 halves, both pretty dreadful which, on balance, neither team deserved to win. Considering they are in the thick of a relegation battle, for some odd reason Stalybridge seemed to employ time-wasting tactics even after Guiseley equalised.
The 4 extra minutes announced at the end of the game insufferably dragged on for what must surely have been the longest 4 minutes in history. However, it wasn't all bad. On the plus side, the weather was nice.

Great interview Ivor. Having dreamt of a season where we wouldn’t entertain relegation, I have dreamt for the last month of something that mattered… To hear, PP say we have 40% of a team for next year makes me think…. Cam (GK) Ible, CMW (CB) Whelan +/- Chips (Midfield) Murphy, Bakker (CF) And that is it Bring on Pre-Season (Nik) I’m surprised he’s got rid of Daly (from interview) It would be nice for us win Vs Liversedge

The weather and the site of people going round in their summer togs was perhaps the most memorable thing about this game, apart from the Lions’ equaliser. My Player Of The Season has to be Courtney Meppen Walters who seems to feature in every last gasp defensive clearance, many with his head. He heads the ball so often, hard and far, I sincerely hope he doesn’t eventually succumb to the condition reputed to affect many ex-footballers today, who played their football in the 1960s/70s. For all the evidence, the football authorities have actually been doing very little with regard to ‘heading a football’ and ‘dementia.’ In fact, watching the game these days, you’d hardly think anybody had ever suggested there was a problem with heading. But, strong evidence eg affecting certain members of the 1966 World Cup winning England team, (no longer around) suggests there most certainly IS!

Stalybridge fans were full of energy and fully enjoyed watching their team play. They were noisy, sang songs for the duration of the match and were pleasant to talk to. All this despite looking doomed to relegation this season. On the other hand Guiseley fans looked like they would rather be anywhere else than at Nethermoor and frankly some of the players looked the same too.
Have to say I wasn't overly impressed with the comments from our Chairman in the programme today, blaming all our woes on Danny Ellis and his signings. He also blamed regular players leaving the club due to "contractual difficulties" on "earlier poor management decisions". I assume this is aimed at George Smith and possibly Ross Daly. My worry is that the board seem to think that appointing Phillips will resolve all our problems. In actual fact, results wise Phillips results are broadly the same as we had with Ellis. The problems this club has had for the last decade are much more deep rooted than a simple managerial change unfortunately and the board seem unable to look at their own role in creating a lot of the mess.
Still, Phillips should be given next season to build his team but anything less than a comfortable playoff position this time next year will be a big disappointment, given the total unwavering confidence the board seem to have in him....

I agree re the Chairman's comments about Danny Ellis. Still, I suppose it's been to long for him to continue blaming Paul Cox. Of the signings since only a very few have improved the squad.
On reflection I'd say it's like much of the past 4 years - a promising start, fade away, loads of new faces, playing people out of position, goal shy, rebuilding job in the summer.

Gutted to hear that Ross Daly has left. He’s never given less than 100% for the club and had a great affinity with supporters young and old.
Nethermoor has become a soulless place of late it was good that the Stalybridge fans brought some Easter cheer.
Can anyone remember when we last played well at home? Stafford second half?
The one constant at any club are it’s fans and we aim to go out with a smile on our faces with Hawaiian Shirt Day at Lancaster on the 22nd. You’ve still time to order one off Amazon ( other retailers are available)
Let’s end the season with some much needed togetherness off the pitch at least.

I thought George Smith and Ross Daly would still be around as part of the foundation core for next season. Also what about Whittam and Boateng? We looked to have a team’s worth of players to build a squad around not so long ago, but obviously PP had/has other ideas. Well, he is the man in charge and has to be allowed to follow his own thinking. Let’s all hope we are in a ‘better place’ with the GAFC team/squad next year at this time.

The post-Stalybridge interview with PP was awkward and uncomfortable and the interviewer certainly seemed to feel this, as he looked for positives whilst the manager batted each one away in turn. Ross Daly seems to have left the club under a cloud, with PP keen to say little more than dismiss his connection to the club brusquely. The overall impression is PP is very unhappy and the reason is he feels too many players are not good enough, but there is also a sense he has also been less than satisfied with many of their attitudes, application either. Huge changes to the personnel for next season seem imminent!

Can’t look at it without remembering that afternoon. It’d be good to take the curse off it.

Whitham’s injury sounds pretty serious. Seems unlikely we’ll see him next season, if at all. I hope he gets the treatment required to get him back on his feet. Mad that footballers at this level can be so completely scuppered by something like that. I’d like to see Boateng in the squad next year, I think he’s done very well, and been one of our most consistent players. But Phillips doesn’t seem to have taken to him for whatever reason, so I suspect he’ll be out too. As you say, let’s hope he has other/better ideas.
