A tough day on the road in a game where we never looked like scoring despite a late consolation from Bakkor. The hosts rode a spell where we dominated possession and came out on top. Meppen-Walters headed a good chance wide but that was as good as it got playing up the hill. Atherton took the lead through Rooney who managed to poke the ball past Bacon. They nearly had a se one moments later but for two excellent blocks on the line. Ible and Murphy failed to get a touch on Hey’s dangerous cross which flashed across the face of goal. The second half got off to the worst possible start when Atherton doubled their lead through Fitzmartin’s rocket just three minutes in. It felt like game over at that point. We did have a chance to halve the deficit when Bakkor crossed in for Hey but he could only head the ball over the bar. There would be no further chances until the end when Bakkor poked in. Onto Liversedge at home on Saturday. Come on Guiseley! AB

We do love to give teams a head start- in fact the last time we scored first in a match was 14th February against Matlock.
As soon as we went behind, it just seemed to be game over as there was no attacking threat other than aimless balls hoofed forwards with no real thought behind them.
The reality is there looked one team today who were truly up for it and had something to play for and that wasn’t Guiseley. No excuses though as unfortunately we were poor today against a poor team.
If the season was 10 matches old, we would be rock bottom of the table- six points with one win in that period. I know it obviously isn’t and we are safe but we must count ourselves fortunate that we had that decent period between January and February, as we would be right in it.

I've seen every team bar one in the league, and before today I had Atherton in the bottom three. Not seen much improvement from them today, but they were comfortably the better side. A late consolation from an inept piece of defending was far more than we deserved. Their keeper has not made a save all game.
Very interesting to hear the views of our supporters today. It seems we are unanimously opposed to the manager. A combination of results, performances, the constant turnover of players, but more the constant slating of players, officials, and today one of the home club's volunteers. The body language of the players suggests they don't want to be there, and you can hardly blame them. A number of supporters have made their thoughts clear to the chairman. One referred to our manager as "Cox" throughout the game. I'm afraid it looks like he's not far wrong.

The foul mouthed language and over-aggressive behaviour from our bench today was appalling and embarrassing. If such a nasty, snarling attitude is essential for success then you can keep it. It’s not the Guiseley way of doing things, and we relinquish the ‘family club’ claim when we carry on like this, and more than one long term supporter has told me they’ll stop attending unless this is fully addressed and rooted out. The directors need to listen because the very nature of our club is at stake here. …….

Worst performance for a long time from a Guiseley team imo. No apparent gameplan, formation, motivation or leadership on the field and seemingly very little off it. If the players keep getting told their useless, no football brainers and not good enough for this league then how can we expect them to be motivated to go out and perform in games that mean nothing to us but everything to the opposition. Good managers in whatever industry hardly ever have to raise their voices because they command respect from those who they manage. Watch the Amazon documentaries on Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta to see how successful managers get the best out of their squad.

Wasn’t there but the fact that our form has dropped off completely after we could no longer get relegated is alarming. There appears to be very little of playing for a future at GAFC which has to be linked to be a manager going out in public and saying few are good enough. Now this is fine if we start like a train next season but the worry is you carry on this form into next season and folk who might sign for next season see how the team ended. I don’t like the guy but I hope he proves me wrong. Recruitment, pre-season and the first 10 games next season will give us a better idea. Otherwise it will be another long and fairly pointless season

Another awful performance again today, however I’ve sadly come to expect this now. It was one of the worst i have seen all season.
Frankly im sick of the excuses from the manager and the chairman about players who are not good enough being the reason we lose every week. Pretty much every player today in our current squad (and for many weeks) are Phillips/O’Neil signings so one of them has to take responsibility for the fact that we have ended the season with a set of players who are apparently nowhere near good enough (according to the manager).
I said months ago that putting O’Neill in charge of transfers would be a disaster and unsurprisingly we have had droves of players brought in every week who are not good enough. Recruitment has been a complete disaster this season and O’Neill should be shown the door immediately. Im a firm believer in giving a manager a decent opportunity so Phillips should be allowed to build his squad this summer and deliver the performances and results that he claims he can, but if this level of performance continues next season it won’t be long before he goes too. 1 win in the last 10 games is shocking and unacceptable whatever excuses the manager may have.

Buxton fc fan here and everything people say about Phillips is true, the language, the tactics and the amount of players used in the season all happened to us too and no doubt Matlock, a good manager but doesn't help himself!
Also hows Bacon doing?

Also hows Bacon doing? Bacon was awful today. At fault with both goals and distribution terrible. Was close to being subbed which is unusual for a keeper.

Yep Bacon was awful. I wouldn’t be surprised if they put a lad from the acadamy in goal instead for the last 2 games as the standard of goalkeeping today (and to a degree on Saturday too) was dreadful.

Every team in our league want promotion and every club know how hard it is to achieve without all the pieces coming together successfully. As we've found to our cost in the past it's not just about money,to my mind its more about personnel from the top down. Our directors and sponsors and volunteers have proved their commitment, but just a point here and not intended as a criticism but our owners are all self made men who are I am sure fully aware of what that takes and find it easier to recognise similar traits in the temperament of others. Which is why I feel they found the likes of Cox and to some extent Philips easier to work with than say Mark Bower, equally ambitious for the club and himself but portrayed it with a bit less egotism. I feel that hanging onto Philips and giving him his head would be a terrible decision one that we would all come to pay the price for.

Seeing as he’s been mentioned, I still live in hope that Mark could come back again one day - what he’s done with no budget at BPA while the club meanders towards the cemetery has been impressive. Does that make me part of the Guiseley sentimentality problem though??

Another lacklustre performance, in my view reflects the quality of our management. When I hear him blaming everyone but himself and hurling foul language at the players pitch side them I really wonder what GAFC has become. I for one do not support the retention of this management team. We have had a season where turnover has exceeded even the dreaded Paul Cox tenure and we still apparently want to give this management team a chance!. Frankly I think they’ve had plenty of chances and throwing new players onto the pitch every week is not the way to build a successful, motivated and committed team. Yes we are not facing relegation this season but as a fan this has been by far the worst season I can remember following the Lions. Just completely fed up.

Think it will be a difficult end to season as well. Last home game v Liversedge will be interesting. They need 3 points for any chance of survival and will be well up for the fight. Going on recent performances, will we be. At least George will not play as he has been loaned to them. If we do win it would probably doom Liversedge to relegation although that prospect didn't go well v Belper.
If its another poor performance & our local rivals beat us (that would be the double other us), people will not be happy and feelings may be voiced, though I hope not & we should clap the lads of at the end come what may.
But I still believe we need to give Mr PP the chance to recruit in the summer when players he wants could be signed (unlike recently when only players teams don't want are made available) to build a Guiseley team that can play good football & aim for the play-off's. I stand behind the goals so don't hear what is being said from the bench, but accept its doesn't sound good & saying players aren't good enough in post-match interviews will be nothing for moral. It would be nice to finish the season in the top half, so here's hoping.
