What a great game to watch and we look so good going forward with Gabs on fire.
A fitting farewell to Guiseley legend Brian Dove who sadly passed away this morning.
RIP Brian ❤️

LGE: GUISELEY 4 v WORKINGTON 3 SAT. 11 NOV. 2023
Neither manager would have been happy with the number of goals their side conceded today. But, if there was a smile (of relief!) at the end, it would have been on the face of the Guiseley manager, at the battling win and another three points, keeping the Lions pushing upwards just under the play-off zone. And, seeing Gabriel Johnson gaining another hat-trick would have made the beam even broader. ( The other scorer for Guiseley was defender Aiden Walker.) In truth, both sides conceded goals that were soft and preventable and certainly both defences were NOT at their best today! Guiseley missed Jameel Ible’s steadying influence and defensive ‘head’ and they lost full back Ollie Brown, who had to be substituted early in the first half after an ultra-aggressive tackle that some fans thought could have resulted in a red card for the offender. Brown hobbled off and hopefully his injury is not serious. The culprit escaped any punishment, and then involved himself in some banter with the Lions fans in the home grandstand. Perhaps the referee’s view was obscured, but later in the game, on a number of occasions, his ‘performance’ looked anything but assured. But, perhaps the main talking point of the first half, at half time for a lot of fans, were the two penalties given-one to Workington and then one almost straight after for Guiseley. These arrived during added time and both were put away-the Lions’ third scored by Gabriel Johnson confidently. (1-0 Johnson, 1-1, 2-1 Walker, 2-2, 3-2 Johnson)
The second half arrived with the two sides still battling-The Lions to hold the 3-2 lead, Workington desperate to come back for a third time. And, it was the team in yellow from further north, who sadly got the equaliser to make it 3-3. Was it going to be one of those days?!! Guiseley looked a bit shocked for a while as Workington upped the pressure to try to get their noses in front. But, it was Gabriel Johnson once again rushing on and calmly slipping the ball beyond the opposition keeper to give the Lions the 4-3 lead. (He deservedly later was awarded MOTM). What energy he showed, still running hard at the end! Workington kept plugging away and had time and chances, but it was not to be for them. In fairness, this was an exciting, eventful game full of action and seven goals-just the job for any neutral in attendance who would have come away well pleased. Most fans love an end-to-end game like this, but not usually the management and coaching staff! Workington did play their part of course and like Guiseley were good in the middle and up front, though their challenges seemed more than a bit OTT at times. But, if Guiseley are going to make a credible promotion challenge they will have to do better defensively in most games. But, of course, by that same token, getting a good result in such circumstances is a positive omen. Teams that win when they lose three goals at home, and are not at their best are certainly doing some things right! But, overall you have to say it was 10/10 for entertainment!

Brilliant game today. Thought we were fantastic in the first half and honestly could have easily added another two to the three we scored before halftime. Second half was a little more even but overall we definitely deserved the win.
Not only have results improved considerably since PP was given the boot but the entertainment in matches is what will keep fans coming back.
Gabriel Johnson is having an absolute belter of a season. We will struggle to keep hold of him if he continues in this form much longer.

The first and last goals saw Gabriel Johnson rescue situations where it looked like the chance had passed. I'm giving him all 4 goals - pretty sure the 2nd cam off somewhere round his middle on the way in to the net.
A couple of months back we looked nothing like that going forwards, and would have been beaten by an attack a strong at Workington's.

There was some great interplay between the attacking players which we saw nothing of under Phillips. The two wingers and two strikers all look great. Obviously Gabriel was the star man today but I thought Platt was really effective as well. We've a really promising midfield partnership in Tongue and Prince. The main worry was defensively. Workington didn't attack us very often but when they did they cut us apart. We were obviously missing Ible today and CMW doesn't look fit (by his own standards).
Beyond picking apart the team.. the game was great fun. We could have had 8 goals. Their number 7 made a very effective villain.

Stood behind goal. 2nd goal definitely hot Gabs shins in way in (but he was offside and interfering with keeper so happy to say Walkers goal!)

Must be gutting to travel all te way from Workington, score three goals and still finish up on the losing side. Having said that if the Lions had taken half of their chances we we could have scored seven or eight! Great tempo throughout the game and we just kept going for another Gabe hat trick and a deserved three points and so on to FCUM next Saturday.

Really exciting to watch and terrific atmosphere. We had so many opportunities to score in the first half. Gabriel is a joy to watch, his fitness and ability to accelerate his pace is maintained throughout the game. Think we need to work on our defence to improve the score line in our favour. A great afternoon for Lions supporters!

Can’t remember when I last enjoyed a game so much. It had everything! (Except polished defending or a red card for the panto villain)
It’s a pleasure to watch a lot of our football at the moment. Gabriel in this form is terrific but the commitment from the whole team is excellent. I really enjoyed seeing Liam back in and winkling out clever little forward balls that he sees more quickly than the average player.
I also like how Andy Welsh carries himself, and the respect he shows our club and the players. I don’t just mean his interviews, but the odd interaction I saw him having with fans and players after the game. And I like what he says about inviting people back to watch us now we’re playing well again. It’ll certainly be an easier sell now than it was before.

Wow, what a game and a big three points at the end of it to add even more gloss to the wins against tough opposition in recent weeks. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at Nethermoor, like the good old days. It started fast with an early goal with Johnson poking past Atkinson after just four minutes, his low shot just out of reach of the away stopper. The fast started continued but we were fluffing our lines and Workington capitalised with an equaliser through Rigg who found a gap in our defence and shot past a helpless Battersby. Murphy, Johnson, Tongue and others all had chances to put us back in front but it was Walker who powered in a cross into the same corner of the net that Johnson opened the scoring in. It was a good header with Johnson claiming a touch on its way in but the goal went to Walker. Brown had to hobble off after a late challenge from Workington captain Symington who was lucky to avoid a card. On another day we would have been out of sight of the visitors but they got a penalty which Devitt slammed in despite Battersby going the right way. There was another twist to come in the added time, Murphy was hacked down in the box and Johnson stepped up to continue his red hot form and double his tally for the afternoon. The second half started with the visitors on top and their dominance paid when Symington got the goal to pull the visitors back level for a third time. It looked as if they might go on to take all three points at times despite Johnson heading over from close range. But with 18 minutes left Johnson made no mistake and ran with the ball at his feet from the centre circle and fired past Atkinson to seal consecutive home hat tricks for the forward. From there was saw out the game well despite Atkinson coming up for a last gasp corner. An excellent game for the 582 in attendance. Well played Guiseley! Onto Garforth Town on Tuesday night in the West Riding County Cup. Come on Guiseley! AB

Still recovering! Thought that was a fantastic game of football. The more we get people through the gates to experience this brand of football and our winning streak then I can see crowds growing again. Hasn’t felt so positive at Nethermoor for some time.
Gabriel Johnson was brilliant today, but so were performances all over the pitch. For example Ollie Battersby produced a top save in that first half. Aiden Walker (might) have grabbed his first goal but also produced some important challenges. Liam Tongue and Prince Ekpolo were up and down the pitch.
Nsaka looked great down the left and Murphy worked so hard to create the space and cause the Workington defence so many problems.
I think Workington played their part in the occasion. Riggs first equalising goal was excellent and he was a constant threat. They look a side much better than recent form suggests. I actually enjoyed Symington’s theatrics. It contributed to the atmosphere and helped the home crowd get more vocally behind the team. Pretty sure he could have had 5 yellow cards at least. The downside is that his reckless tackle on Ollie Brown looked like a nasty injury. Fingers crossed that it’s not as bad as it looked as he hobbled off.
Good atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards. It’s the type of game we will be talking about for years to come. The whole occasion felt a fitting tribute to Brian Dove.
