Guiseley AFC have today parted company with frst team manager Andy Welsh. Whilst we appreciate that coming in mid season with a settled squad was a difficult task, unfortunately we haven’t seen the desired improvements and momentum in the team’s performances and results as we approach the final stages of the season and felt a change was needed to give the squad the best chance of picking up as many points as possible in the last five games, whilst we look to continue to build into next season with a settled team. We thank Andy for his time and efforts with the club, leading us to the county cup semi finals and keeping the side within three points of the playoffs, including a notable double against Radcliffe. Club captain Liam Tongue will lead the team as caretaker for the remainder of the season, with his assistant staff to be confirmed. Full statement: guiseleyafc.co.uk/club-statement-andy-welsh/AB

I can’t say I saw that coming!
Guiseley’s league record under Andy (including the Marske match): Played 24 Won 12 Drew 3 Lost 9
Goals scored- 44 Goals conceded- 36
Think I would have personally given Andy the Summer to build his own squad as I’ve seen quite a bit of promise over his tenure. That being said we have been unquestionably inconsistent, winning back-to-back league matches just twice since Andy joined.
I wish him all the best and Liam did a great job earlier in the season, so hope we can still finish strongly.

Hands up all those who saw that coming.
Nobody?
Neither did I.

Bonkers. When you look at the patience given to BigNob & Russ, PP etc I think I could predict this. It didn’t look like the team were playing for him on Saturday and at that point you either back the manager or the team. However I did think AW would last until the end of season then if we didn’t make play-offs he’d be given the heave-ho not because he can’t manage but because he’s not been playing our star players which must grate with those above… I liked him, liked his family and am sad to see him go. He deserved far better than some of the folk before him…

Good luck to Andy Welsh for the future, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and got us playing some nice, exciting football with some great results along the way including the Radcliffe double.
Also welcome back to Liam Tongue into a role he excelled at earlier this campaign, a big five games left, good luck Liam! AB

Very strange timing for this decision, with only 5 games left. Dont envy Liam the task of trying to get us into the play offs given the way we've been playing lately. Agree we have given previous(less successful) incumbents longer to prove themselves. Dont really know what I feel about this decision- its odd !

Surely there is more to this than meets the eye. On the face of it it makes no sense whatsoever to bin the manager (who actually had a pretty good record up to the last week or two and much better than his predecessors who were given much longer to succeed than him) with five matches of the season left. Having said that the last three performances have been insipid and the three of four before that weren’t great, even though we had some decent results. Against Ilkeston and Lancaster the team looked very disjointed and, as others have mentioned, I thought lacked passion and determination that seemed to be in abundance just a few weeks ago - the rapid evaporation of form has been astonishing. So the logic must be - the manager had lost the dressing room, the Board weren’t convinced he was the right choice for next season, therefore there is nothing to lose in getting rid of him now and letting Liam Tongue have another go - maybe five wins and a bit of luck with other results and we could make the playoffs after all. More performances like Saturday’s and we wouldn’t get another point this season. That’s my go at working out something that seems very odd at first glance.

A very poor decision in my book. A manager who wanted to play football inherited a squad who had been put together to play a more physical game. When he took over fitness levels increased, results improved, and a number of players showed improvement. They were using the technology properly, and it sounded to me like he wanted to move the club forward and get the right characters on board. I assume some of the players he didn't want were the highest earners and couldn't be moved on. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with his own squad.
But - things I overheard made me think at least one of the board didn't like the manager, and if that was what I thought I wonder if that had got through to the players? And had there been a leak that the manager wouldn't be around next season? Might explain the downturn in performances.
So we sack a third permanent manager in under 2 seasons. Who would be willing to take on that kind of club?

Madness. And it doesn't reflect at all well on a board that hasn't made a successful appointment in a very long time now.

Madness. And it doesn't reflect at all well on a board that hasn't made a successful appointment in a very long time now. This is the problem all day long for me. How many more times will this managerial merry-go-round continue before the board admit their failings?? In a barely 2 years since Bignot and O'Neill were sacked we now have (all competitions): Steve Kittrick (Interim) - 7 matches Danny Ellis - 24 matches Danny Forrest (Interim) - 1 match Paul Phillips - 33 matches Liam Tongue (Interim) - 7 matches Andy Welsh - 28 matches Liam Tongue (Interim again) - 5 matches Coupled with the fact that we still haven't managed to get the all weather pitch after 3 years of trying, facilities and services at the ground are at an all time low, it just all points to a naïve board who appear to have little clue how to run the club properly. Its time they looked in the mirror and admitted their part in this mess

Not been easy watching our playoff campaign disintegrate in spring for the second season running. Last year we held onto PP when it was patently obvious he wasn’t someone we should want to keep around, I wonder if this is partly in reaction to letting that fester too long. Certainly this regime didn’t seem as overtly toxic as the last.
I guess it was a straight decision between giving Andy the reigns and letting him doing a proper rebuild in the summer, or having a long shot gamble at trying for playoffs now and then hiring a new manager for the rebuild. Letting the season drift towards mid table and then making the change doesn’t achieve anything.
Not sure I’m comfortable with the players taking responsibility for the season end but Liam is a good character and his difficult second album will tell us more about who deserves to stay here next year.
I don’t know though - I’m often told I’m too equivocal on here! We saw some good football under Andy and I really hope that’s just a taste of good times returning and not a flash in the pan.

Any coincidence this has been announced on the day a managerial job came up at the bottom of Mark Bower's garden?

Very disappointing news. I agree with most of what has been said. On watching the highlights of the Ilkeston and Lancaster games, we weren't actually playing as bad as it felt like watching live. Certainly the Lancaster keeper made quite a few good saves that I didn't appreciate live. We just seemed to be stuck in a rut of conceding the first goal and always playing from behind.
Does sniff of something that isn't in the public domain, something political or personality wise in play. "...parted company" so not fired and didn't quit?
