An early exit from the Emirates FA Cup for the Lions last night after a spirited first half showing. The game couldn't have got off to a worse start when Mampala converted from the first attack of the game drilling a low shot past Battersby. It was a man of the match performance from the former Grimsby keeper who pulled off a string of impressive saves from Marine's onslaught. The hosts more than deserved their victory last night and whilst we created a number of good chances they could have extended their lead too but for wasteful finishing and good goalkeeping. Devine had a couple of good opportunities to level, one where he was baring down on goal but released a shot a fraction too late and another when inside the box he shot straight at Goddard. A minute after the opening goal Pratt had a brilliant chance when he was put through one on one with Goddard but the keeper got a good hand to the shot. Denton then had three bites of the cherry to get an equaliser, his header was saved by Goddard, the rebound was then blocked by the keeper before the second rebound, from a tight angle, was cleared from underneath his own bar by Hayde. Battersby then made an unbelievable stop to palm Doyle's powerful shot over the bar. Marine hit the bar with a cross ten minutes before the break and Sinclair-Smith had Battersby beaten but his shot drifted just wide. The second half started in similar vein to the first but Mampala fluffed his lines on this occasion shooting straight at Battersby. Valsau then ran at the heart of the home defence but his shot was straight at Goddard. The next big chance fell to Denton, Pratt's quick throw found Murphy in behind the home defence, his cross was perfect for the big striker but his feet got in a tangle and the week effort was easily saved by Goddard. Valsau had a shot from the edge of the box from a free kick but it went straight into Goddard's hands. Marine doubled their lead though when White unleashed a pile driver into the top corner, Battersby was stranded as the ball flashed passed him smacking the underside of the bar on its way in. Then four minutes later the night went from bad to worse when Pratt went in late and saw red. Marine finished off a fading Lions side with a third from Soloman. Sinclair-Smith nearly made it four in the final minute but his shot went just wide of the mark. A tough night with only 12 players available and two of those being goalkeepers but with Ollie Brown, Callum Chippendale and Joe Stacey all hopefully due to return on Saturday and with Edwin Essel and David Bayoh both being eligible for the trip to Bamber Bridge Phillips will have more options to choose from. Come on Guiseley! AB

I like the underarm analogy but as the underman bowler in question I see it as my job to get PPs views out there, whether I agree with everything he says or not. Bowling bouncers can actually be less productive and just lead to ducking and weaving. It can also lead to a poor working relationship, where all you get is short and evasive answers. I am happy to take criticism as I continue to learn the job, but there is no sign that PP is just patting my underarms back. Whatever your view of PP, he fronts up willingly and quickly every week, never avoids a question and gives full answers. If my questions are too soft, how is it that some complain his answers are too abrasive?

As I understand it, Russ scouts for players to order. Most people seem to think we have a good squad, so I don't see any mileage in blaming Russ. The problems are on the pitch. Not blaming anyone! Just my opinion that the Manager should be in total control of signings and not the modern way of Directors of Football. Not saying the manager is or isn't! Haven't a clue.

I understand why people want their questions answers in the way they would want them to be asked… but I think when it comes to a club’s own channels, you have no choice but to ask them what they want to say and then listen. It’s not journalism, we’re not trying to catch anyone out and the content isn’t monetised in any way, it’s literally a chance for the manager to talk to the fans about the game and the team. You asked similar questions of Dave Noble when it was his turn to stand in and give one last year and got a totally interview than from Paul. Colin asked lots of different managers the same questions and in each case their own approach comes through (e.g. Kitty's emotions, Mark's calmness, Locky's cageyness, Paul Cox's talkativeness, Marcus' reflectiveness).

If my questions are too soft, how is it that some complain his answers are too abrasive? In truth, most interviewers of football managers tend to ‘bowl underarm’ some of the time. This is done because they don’t want to be on the receiving end of the potential wrath of said manager. (There is an online video of an interviewer questioning a manager. The manager becomes irate, because a probing question obviously touched a nerve. Finally, as the ‘vibe’ between the two worsens, the manager makes a lunge at the interviewer and hits him off screen. You can hear the impact!) I would not want that to happen to anyone doing their job. But, I mentioned it, not as a general comment on your interviewing skills and techniques overall, but with passing reference to last night’s particular end-of- game interview. I thought, PP’s comments were not convincing, despite the fact he wasn’t asked any question that could be described as ‘awkward.’ The manager must say what he wants, but last night some of his comments were very revealing. And, previously in your role of pundit to the commentator, you had said in the first half, “The attack is twice as good as last Saturday, but the defence is three times worse!” I do respect the fact, PP doesn’t duck interviews, but many fans are seeking answers, credibility and the chance our “disappointing start” (as you said on here previously) will not harm the Lions’ 2023/24 chances. All who follow Guiseley know things are just not right and haven’t been since last season. PP was given the chance to completely overhaul the squad. Lots of players headed out and he has replaced them with his choices. It is PP’s team. (I think some players from last season, were let go prematurely). And two have left more recently. And, last night we could only muster 12 fit players including two goalkeepers. There’s a question right there.

I think the interviews referred to are journalists for media companies selling engaging content.
I agree that Ivor’s interviews with Paul are revealing, and he does it without being difficult towards someone you’ll then see later in the clubhouse.

Really is time Marine found a better camera position and where is the sending off? Did they miss it? First two goals were preventable and we had at least four good chances but having said that its another defeat and I just can't see where another win is going to come from.

In 9 months nothing has changed for the better. I suspect nothing will change while O'Neill remains the power behind the throne. Why do you look to Russ rather than Paul as to why the team is so aggressive and playing like strangers? I’ve no horse here but isn’t Russ’ role limited to scouting and getting players lined up for the manager to choose from? If he was involved with coaching or running the team it’d be different? In the latter stages of the relegation season one of the directors was saying Russ O'Neill should be manager the following season. Less than 2 months in to the season he was back at the club, in a role which hadn't previously existed. 6 weeks later the manager was gone, replaced by a guy most recently in place at Matlock and Buxton - slap bang in the middle of Russ O'Neill's favourite shopping area. One of the wider management team under the previous regime told me that Russ O'Neill was always the one arguing we should play long ball, even when everyone agreed the central midfield was our strongest area. We are now an unashamedly long ball team. Ours signings continue to be from, or have played for a club in, Sheffield, Alfreton or Derbyshire, rather than being local to the manager. Two more arrived from Alfreton over summer. Brad Wade, Prince Ekpolo, Gabriel Johnson, Liam Tongue and Reece Kendall are all back at the club having previously been brought in during the Bignot and O'Neill days. Several of the players coming in said Russ O'Neill was a factor, so presumably he's involved in more than just an initial recruitment way. So my thinking is that Russ O'Neill is the directors' preferred manager, we're playing his brand of football with his players, and we're getting Russ O'Neill results. Add to that, I don't think Paul Phillips is the kind of character Gary Douglas has previously appointed. I've heard people say that Phillips isn't the kind of person you'd expect to stand for someone else pulling the strings, but I do wonder whether this was his only option.

It looked a pretty bad tackle.

The narrative is coherent but I think there’s a lot of stretched dot joining here. I would just say that anything looks like long ball compared to Bignotball, PP’s teams also played our current ‘style’ at Matlock and Buxton, and “Russ O’Neill results” as a solo manager were to get promoted out of the division above the one we’re on the edge of the relegation zone in. (I think we all agree that there’s no way that Russ could be Guiseley’s next manager and everything he’s said from before he joined us with Marcus suggests he’d have no interest in it anyway even if that weren’t the case.)

Would agree Nik Think Russ has quite a bit of credit left in the Bank. We shouldn’t forget that him and Marcus helped the club away from financial disaster after the PC debacle. I can’t say I ever warmed to Marcus, he was very much a preening Alpha Male character. Russ appeared different. And the team with Aaron Martin, Gabby (1st time), Aram Solomons was a good team. I don’t think the current squad is the problem I was really optimistic ahead of this season. I thought we’d assembled a good squad. We looked to be playing a fairly settled team the last few friendlies with good results and performances. The wheels came off with the Whitby game. I don’t think any of us anticipated that result. And unfortunately we just haven’t picked up since then. And the style of play and player churn don’t help the club or manager when the results don’t follow. As CDP said, i think we’d be turning a blind eye if we were winning. If we go back to last season, his arrival did produce a change in fortune and for a while, we talked of play-offs and all was well. But then the results turned, we had constant new faces and noticed the manager wasn’t all that nice. In many ways, PP was lucky to survive the end of last season. He’s been given the benefit of the doubt, given his own squad but still can’t change the results. There is an inevitability as to how this ends….

I've not been to any games this season. For various reasons.
I was pretty sad when we sacked the Dannys last season. And I honestly can't see how we're better off now than we were then. Even when Kitty came in for the relegation in which he gave us a fighting chance, there was a feel good factor. When we announced Danny Ellis and Danny Forrest there was a feel good factor.
There isn't one now. It's really sad to see where we are now.
